Take A Trip To Retrace The Beatles

When four Liverpudlian lads formed a band in the 60s, the history of music changed forever. The Beatles went on to become one of the most influential bands in the social and pop movements of the 60s and continue to remain popular now, nearly five decades later. Many fans from all around the world may have relinquished true Beatlemania, but are still keen to witness some of the landmarks and areas that so inspired the band in their early years.

Retracing the steps of the Beatles may sound like an impossible task when you think of the many tours and overseas jaunts the band took over the years, but the Beatles enjoyed their early years close to home and any Beatles fan can enjoy the chance to see some of the most famous clubs and sights connected with the band.

The first place for any fan hoping to retrace the steps of the Beatles is the streets of Liverpool.

The earliest incarnation of the Beatles saw the now infamous John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and of course Pete Best (later to be replaced by Ringo Starr) finding their feet in the musical landscape they were set to change forever. An early additional member, bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, left the band after a short period of time and the Beatles continued to refine their sound in Liverpool and Hamburg for the first few years. There are a large number of guided walks in Liverpool that can show fans around highlights such as the Cavern Club – the venue in which the Beatles’ popularity blossomed.

A range of exhibitions are also on offer in Liverpool, such as The Beatles Story, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the feeling of the times. Many also like to pay a visit to Penny lane, the street in the band’s hometown that inspired the popular song of the same name.

Quickly gaining in popularity, the band had its first recording session at the now iconic Abbey Road Studios in London and the album went on to enjoy a number one spot in the British chart. It was a sign of things to come, and the band topped charts consistently over the following decade. The studio was later immortalised in the album Abbey Road. This London sight is another ideal destination for anyone hoping to chart the UK history of The Beatles for themselves.

By booking hotels in Liverpool and London and setting out with some Beatles literature, retracing the story of the Beatles can be an amazing experience for any fan of the fab four.

Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles – Who Was She?

Do you remember that haunting song by the Beatles, the one with the line “Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name, nobody came”?

A very sad song, and at the time it was rather out of keeping with the type of songs that we had come to expect from the ‘fab four’.

Just to remind you, here are a couple of verses of that song.

”Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people, where do they all belong?

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

So, who was Eleanor Rigby, and was she a real person or was she just a figment of the imagination, something like ‘lovely Rita, meter maid’?

Well, I was playing some gigs recently in Liverpool, and although my evenings were busy, the rest of the day was free and so I decided to use my spare time to do some research into this and to try and find out if there really was an Eleanor Rigby.

I looked up a few points of reference in the local library, donned my Sherlock Holmes hat, and set off for a suburb of Liverpool known as Woolton.

In the Anglican church there you will find a typical English churchyard, surrounding the church, and you will find many tombstones, but one headstone in particular caught my attention.

Wait for it. The headstone is dedicated to an Eleanor Rigby.

Having located such an interesting gravestone I then began to ask myself if any of the Beatles lived anywhere nearby. And guess what? As a child John Lennon used to live in Menlove Avenue, which is very close to the church.

This made me think back to my childhood, and I remember as a young boy I and my friends would often play in our local churchyard, playing hide and seek and other games behind the headstones.

Therefore it is not unreasonable to assume that John Lennon also probably often went into this churchyard, and would have seen the headstone dedicated to Eleanor Rigby.

Now unfortunately I only had a couple of days in Liverpool so I was not able to dig any deeper into this, but I intend to return soon and continue my research.

I want to spend some time going through the church records, and I would like to see what I can find out about the other people mentioned on Eleanor,s headstone.

If you would like to be kept posted on this, and kept up to date with my research, then please click on the following link. You will be taken to a page and near the bottom you will find my email address. Just send me a note saying keep me informed or something like that, and I will email you whenever I have found out some fresh information.

The Beatles – Penny Lane Promo Video

“Penny Lane” is a song by The Beatles, written by Paul McCartney, recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions, and released in February 1967 as one side of a double A-sided single, along with John Lennon’s “Strawberry Fields Forever”. The song was later included on the Magical Mystery Tour LP (1967). The single was the result of the record company wanting a new release after several months of no new Beatles releases. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song at #449 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Background The song’s title is derived from the name of a street in the band’s hometown, Liverpool. The area that surrounds its junction with Smithdown Road is also commonly called Penny Lane. Locally the term “Penny Lane” was the name given to Allerton Road and Smithdown Road and its busy shopping area. Penny Lane is named after James Penny, an 18th century slave trader. McCartney and Lennon grew up in the area and they would meet at Penny Lane junction in the Mossley Hill area to catch a bus into the centre of the city. The street is an important landmark, sought out by most Beatles fans touring Liverpool. In the past, street signs saying “Penny Lane” were constant targets of tourist theft and had to be continually replaced. Eventually, city officials gave up and simply began painting the street name on the sides of buildings. This practice was stopped in 2007 and more theft-resistant “Penny Lane” street signs have since been installed though some are still stolen

Clothing Styles of Tomorrow are Evolving on the Streets of Spitalfield Today

Spitalfield; Perhaps it’s not the most attractive name for a London suburb. But its early music halls propelled Charlie Chaplin to international stardom. As a major entertainment district for many decades, fashion styles evolve in the evenings as the pub and cub scene come alive. Up and down the streets and alleyways in a mixture of classes and cultures.

Also famous for The artist Mark Gertler (1891-1939) is perhaps most admired for his 1916 painting The Merry-Go-Round, which hangs prominently at Tate Modern. He is less favourably immortalised in the 1995 biopic Carrington, in which he is portrayed as the tormented lover of the androgynous Bloomsbury artist Dora Carrington.

Spitalfields takes its name from a hospital and priory known as St. Mary’s Spital founded in 1197. Most of the area was built after the Great Fire of London and Spitalfield’s market was first established in the 1680’s. Most of the beautiful houses in and around Fournier, Princelet and Wilkes Street date from around 1685 when the Huguenots fled France, bringing their silk weaving skills.

The United States’ Liberty Bell was originally cast in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in Whitechapel Road. The pavement here is extra wide – this was the main way via Aldgate for cattle and sheep to be driven into London, together with carts laden with hops for brewing and hay for cattle.

Renowned tailor to Tom Cruze and David Beckham, Timonthy Everest concludes many decades of change to the area by opening up shop at 32 Elder Street, once the residence of Bloomsbury artist Mark Gertler. He politely shunned the inherent stuffiness of traditional tailoring, by, saying “moving to Savile Row would be like moving back in with my parents”

He rejuvenated British fashion icon Daks and helped prop Marks and Spencers return to traditional pound for pound quality with his outstanding “Autograph” range of men’s clothing and fashion accessories.

Timothy’s move to the area and adopting the Spitalfield flower as his signature marked a new direction for men’s clothing and accessories. Savile row is far removed from the hub of style evolution. Perhaps the beginning of a new era has begun and more tailors will follow to set up shop in Elder Street.

Now the Spitalfield flower blooms on jacket linings and ties, as though culminating centuries of historic events. And to push the boundaries of innovation even further he has re-invented Swank silver cufflinks, styled on designs from the 1940’s.

Swank Inc a popular designer and manufacturer of men’s cufflinks were incorporated on April 17, 1936. When Cufflinks peaked in the 1960’s they were making 12 million a year.

Even though these were aimed at the lowest end of the market, retailing for an average of $2.50 a pair, that still adds up to a lot of men wearing cufflinks. These days the figure is closer to 200,000, but cufflinks are making a strong comeback with gross sales having increased consistently over the last ten years, while the French cuff continues to be the most prestigious type of shirt.

Nothing in Spitalfield lays to wrack and ruin for long. It’s constantly being rejuvenated and with each new generation evolves different styles from all walks of life up and down the streets of Spitalfield.

You can manufacture fashion clothing, but style is an evolution. Ask Vivienne Westwood

To draw a comparison; The Beatles evolved, The Monkees were manufactured.

Perpetuating traditional values of English made clothing and accessories is part of our ethos.
